Coachmaker
The Life and Times of Philip Godsal 1747—1826

by John Ford

The personal papers of Philip Godsal, carriage-maker to the stars of Regency England, have been preserved for over a century in a remarkable archive. Now published for the first time, the diary that Godsal meticulously maintained for 37 years allows the first extensive modern study of the “mystery” of coachmaking, while at the same time providing an intimate portrait of a man, his family, and how his life and business changed when he began to supply the rich and famous with their (then) most coveted and expensive fashion accessory.

JOHN FORD has a degree in Modern History and is now a freelance writer and editor. He has written several books on sport and social history, and contributed a number of biographies to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.
