The Chambon and deGogue are examples of schooling equipment which can easily be misused and I don’t recommend that a novice try them without the help and supervision of a knowledgeable person. However, properly used, they can be immensely effective. They’re excellent for horses who tend to be tense and hollow through the back – the Chambon teaches the horse to yield at the poll and stretch his head and neck down and forward. When the de Gogue is added to the equation, flexion is added to the poll yielding and the horse stretches his neck and back, using the withers as a fulcrum. Those experienced with this equipment will find it to be the best way to start young horses, moving on to sidereins once the action of the Chambon and de Gogue have been established.
